Hector Borges
Héctor Borges Sánchez hails from Baracoa – a small town at the eastern most tip of Cuba known for it’s unique cuisine that you don’t find anywhere else on the island. Dishes there often feature coconut milk, cacoa, and bácan (made from bananas and wrapped in the banana leaf).
Hector has an amazing way with food and will cook – for one night only – a traditional Baracoa dinner at a quaint Baracoa restaurant in the heart of Old Havana so you can experience the rich tastes of eastern Cuba. It promises to be an unforgettable night!
Hector will be with us throughout our entire journey, working alongside Sanne as a photo assistant and alongside Travel Cuba as a local guide.
Hector’s background is expansive. Following an education in cultural studies at el Universidad de Guantánamo, he worked as a salsa dancer in prominent hotels and later as a health department administrator leading a brigade focused on the prevention of vector-borne diseases.
He and Sanne have worked together for several years and today are partners in both work and life. They recently collaborated together on an anthropological research project through Wageningen University of the Netherlands that was focused on social housing in Santiago de Cuba.
